Curriculum

General Learner Outcomes (GLO)
The over-arching goals of standards-based learning for all students in all grade levels.

There are 6 GLOs:

  • Self-directed Learner: The ability to be responsible for one's own learning
  • Community Contributor: The understanding that it is essential for human beings to work together
  • Complex Thinker: The ability to demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving
  • Quality Producer: The ability to recognize and produce quality performance and quality products
  • Effective Communicator: The ability to communicate effectively
  • Effective and Ethical User of Technology: The ability to use a variety of technologies effectively and ethically
 
Common Core State Standards (CCSS)

Hawaii Common Core Standards define the knowledge and skills students need to succeed in college and careers when they graduate. They align with college and workforce expectations, are clear and consistent, include rigorous content and application of knowledge through higher-order skills, are evidence-based, and are informed by standards in top-performing countries.

Common Core is not the curriculum or a set of teaching methods, but standards. Standards define what students should understand and be able to do at each grade level. Teachers, parents and community leaders crafted the Common Core standards, which were initiated by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers.

English Language Arts (ELA)

Starfall (PK)
Starfall's intuitive learning environment encourages children to explore letters and sounds, word recognition, reading comprehension, and fluency. Developed under the guidance of professional educators, our phonics-based learn-to-read activities encourage free exploration and play within a sequentially organized framework. We also offer fun mathematics and music activities. 
 
 
Wonders (K-6)

Reading Wonders is the first and only reading program designed specifically for the Common Core State Standards for Reading/Language Arts. Combining research-based instruction with new tools to meet today’s challenges, every component and every lesson is designed for effective and efficient CCSS instruction. The program provides support to:

  • Building a strong reading foundation
  • Accessing complex text
  • Finding and using text evidence
  • Engaging in collaborative conversations
  • Writing Sources

Using a rich range of diverse print and digital media, Wonders provides the instructional support and materials you will only find in a program that was created to teach the rigor, intent, and depth of the new Common Core State Standards.

Reading Intervention

Reading interventions are provided to all students daily based on data obtained from our Universal Screener, DIBELS, and classroom data.  Small Group Instruction is utilized to provide students with specific instruction.  Targeted students receive interventions focused on fluency and foundational skills utilizing research-based strategies. Programs used are The Six Minute Solution and Orton-Gillingham.

Math

 

ORIGO Stepping Stones has been written and developed by a team of experts to provide teachers with access to a world-class elementary math program.

Stepping Stones in an innovative online program that:

  • Fosters students’ thinking and reasoning skills.
  • Delivers multiple ways to differentiate classroom instruction.
  • Provides a valuable source of professional learning for the teachers.
  • Presents methods to access deep understanding and skills.
  • Is rich in online and print resources that engage all students.
  • Offers a cost-effective solution to core math implementation.
  • Assist in the recommended shift to digital instructional materials.

Go Math (Grade 6)

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Go Math was written to develop and create mathematical thinkers to support the shifts of the Common Core State Standards and the Smarter Balanced Assessment. 

Go Math is the only program where students…

  • Narrow their focus for deeper understanding
  • Master concepts through engaging activities which develop fluency and build higher-order thinking (H.O.T.) skills
  • Incorporate concept, application, and skills instruction through the "5E" instructional model: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate
  • Learn CCSS and Mathematical Practices with embedded focus, coherence, and rigor
  • Develop skills on a personalized learning path using technology
 
Math Intervention

Small Group Instruction is utilized to provide students with specific instruction.  Targeted students receive interventions focused on computational fluency and foundational skills utilizing research-based strategies.

i-Ready Learning
 i‑Ready Learning is a collection of rigorous reading and mathematics instructional resources designed to address every student’s learning needs, accelerate growth, and enable all students to access grade-level learning. i‑Ready Learning gives our teachers the ability to:
  • Deliver precise instructional pathways that are guided by i‑Ready Assessment data
  • Engage students through motivating, personalized instruction, learning games, and other resources
  • Address learning gaps, provide scaffolded supports, challenge above-level students, and prepare all students for state and national standards
 
 
Project Based Learning (PBL)

Project Based Learning is an instructional approach built upon authentic learning activities that engage student interest and motivation. Students go through an extended process of inquiry in a response to a complex question, problem, or challenge. These rigorous projects generally reflect the types of learning and work people do in the everyday world outside the classroom while holding students accountable for their learning while teaching them 21st century skills. Every grade level has a signature project.   (Waimalu’s Comprehensive Needs Assessment, 2012)
