Waimalu is a school that receives Title I funding. The purpose of Title I is to provide financial assistance to schools with at least 48% of the enrollment receiving free or reduced-priced meals.
For the school year of 2016-17, Waimalu received about $115,000 to support student learning. A portion of these funds will be used to purchase supplemental curricular material for our reading and math programs. We will also use these funds to hire part time teachers and paraprofessional tutors who support Waimalu's "inclusion efforts". What this means is that we try to include all students, to the maximum extent possible, to learn alongside their typical peers, both in and out of the classroom. The additional personnel allows for the instruction to be "tailored" to specific needs when it is appropriate. This has proven to be a successful model in facilitating learning for our struggling learners and it helps our students develop understanding, tolerance, and acceptance with diversity from all walks of life.
